By embarking on this course comprised of self-learning modules, you are taking an important step toward putting patient safety at the top of your nursing priorities. Implementing good patient safety measures into your nursing practice means maintaining a working knowledge of current patient safety guidelines. This course is designed to help you do just that.


As nurses, we are committed to fostering the health and well-being of our patients. Unfortunately, patients can come to harm either because of an error in the care we provide or because of an inadvertent omission of care. Many of these instances of harm to patients are preventable. In this course, you will learn about some of the most common threats to patients’ safety and the steps that you can take to protect your patients from harm.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • identify common threats to patient safety;
  • give examples of ways in which nurses can reduce or eliminate common threats to patient safety;
  • apply the recommended actions in order to enhance the safety of your patients;
  • and evaluate the impact of those actions on the safety status of your patients.
